The best homemade king cake!

It's carnival time! Bust out the Mardi Gras beads and celebrate with this delicious king cake recipe. King cake is an essential part of the Mardi Gras celebration. This one has cinnamon dough stuffed with a cream cheese filling, topped with a lightly lemon flavored glaze. 

Ingredients

milk active dry yeast eggs butter sugar vanilla all purpose flour salt ground cinnamon lemon brown sugar cream cheese powdered sugar decorating sugar & sprinkles

Activate yeast in warm milk. Add wet ingredients to a stand mixer, then sprinkle in dry ingredients. Mix until a dough ball has formed.

Knead the dough until it becomes elastic. Transfer to a greased bowl to rise for 1 hour. The dough should double in size.

Cut dough in half and roll each half into a large rectangle.  Mix together the cream cheese filling, and cinnamon sugar.

Spread softened butter over each rectangle, then cover evenly with cinnamon sugar mixture.

Pipe cream cheese filling along the long edge of the rectangle, and gently roll up into a filled roll shape. Repeat with the other rectangle.

Twist the rolls together then form a circle. Seal the ends together. Let the dough rise again for another 30 minutes.

Brush with egg wash then bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the dough comes out clean.

Once cool, top with icing. Decorate with purple, green and gold sugar and sprinkles. Don't forget the king cake baby!
